To put it simply:

The body is always playing with its sympathetic / parasympathetic balance

The body LOVES to
sleep, heal, and engage in action

- action is instinctive, and the impulses are intelligent for homing, gathering, feeding, bonding, mating, playing.

If you think of something stressful, your body will respond by activating the sympathetic response to some degree.

If you stay relaxed and think of something stressful, the stress response will tend to fade away - this is called "desensitization." If you meditate and think of something stressful, your body will tend to tune its responses to be elegant and efficient.
The body loves efficiency. No wasted energy.

If you think of something relaxing, your body will activate the parasympathetic response.
The body is all about surviving and thriving.
The body loves meditation.

What is the technique for eliciting the relaxation response?

1. Repeat a word, sound, prayer, phrase, or muscular activity.
2. Passively disregard everyday thoughts that come to mind, and return to your repetition.

Over the last 40 years of testing, I have found the the Triple Shakti Model, or the 8 R model, work better, make it easier to meditate, and easier to carry the benefits over into daily life.

Meditation is a natural rest state.
The body spontaneously enters a kind of rest as deep as, or deeper than, sleep.
It does this in a few minutes.

During meditation, the body activates the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems.
And it heals itself

And it works on adapting to challenge:

It practices staying relaxed while confronting fears.

Meditative experience is often a quick alternation of parasympathetic and sympathetic.

sympathetic parasympathetic division

Meditative experience is often a quick alternation of parasympathetic and sympathetic.

The body mind system wants to practice staying at ease and relaxed while thinking of complex and challenging situations in life. This is not a
failure in meditation. Your mind is not wandering. It is going on an expedition.
